10 FACTS you can ACT on
Based on a year’s research (& as a fellow parent), here’s my Top 10 Facts & Acts (in no specific order). We all worry about pedophiles but the real picture shows bigger threats to our kids lie elsewhere. 1) Road Traffic Accidents
Leading cause of death in children; 16,400 in Europe alone. Not to mention injuries – minor & major. |
2) Drowning
Leading cause of injury deaths in children aged 1–4 in the European Region.
More than 5,000 fatal drowning events in Europe every year.

3) Poisoning
3,000 deaths from acute poisoning in the European Region in 2004
The home is the most common setting for childhood poisoning. |
4) Burns
1,700 deaths in children aged 0–19 years from burns (European Region 2004).
Those that survive can be permanently scarred or disabled. |
5) Falls
1,500 deaths from falls (European Region 2004). |
6) Choking
Each year, more than 17,000 infants and children are treated in US hospital emergency departments for choking-related incidents, more than 80% of these occur in children aged four years & younger. 60% related to food (19% from candy or gum), 31% related to non-food substances (13% were coins). |
7) Exposure to violence in media
The American Academy of Pediatrics has stated that exposure to violence in media, including television, movies, music and video games & news programs is a significant risk to the health of children and adolescents. Some consequences to children are aggressive behavior, desensitization to violence, nightmares and fear of being harmed. |
8) The Internet
Research shows up to one in 12 of the eight million British children with internet access have gone on to meet someone in reality after they first made contact on the internet. |
9) Domestic violence
Between 133 and 275 million children worldwide are estimated to witness domestic violence annually. Zero tolerance of domestic violence. |
10) Child abuse
Almost 2/3 children are abused by people they know. Know what to look out for. |
